Patañjali's Yogasūtra II.4

Yogasūtra II.4 - avidyā kṣetram-uttareṣāṁ-prasupta-tanu-vicchinna-udārāṇām

The following Sūtra explains the interrelationships between the Kleśa-s.

Misapprehension [of our true nature] is the fertile field for the other [afflictions], whether dormant, weak, suspended or fully active.

The Kleśa-s manifest at various levels of intensity. Either they are dormant, weak or fully active. Normally, when one of them is fully active, the others are suspended. It is harder to perceive them when they are dormant or weak. They are easier to recognize when fully active, but by then it is often too late, too difficult, to stop them.
