Patañjali's Yogasūtra II.30 | Explained By Viniyoga® Expert Dr Kausthub Desikachar

Yogasūtra II.30 - ahiṁsā-satya-asteya-brahmacarya-aparigrahāḥ yamāḥ

Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation in our actions, [and] non- covetousness are the [five] social restraints.

Not causing any injury or harm, by thought, word or deed, to any living being is Ahiṁsā (non-violence). Speaking and living by the truth, which should contribute to the well-being of all life, is Satya (truthfulness). It is a state of congruence between words, intentions and actions. Not stealing another’s property, by thought, word or action, is Asteya (non-stealing). Not wasting one’s vital energy by any means is Brahmacarya (moderation). Not accumulating more than is necessary is Aparigraha (non-covetousness).

How we exhibit these qualities and how we strive to live by them inevitably depends on our social and cultural backgrounds and our own individual characters, potentials and latent impressions. The manifestation of these five is also a reflection of the extent to which we have evolved in our spiritual evolution and how dominant are our Kleśa-s. These five restraints must all be expressed in words, actions and thought.
